Spinoza in "God in the dock"
Vandaag had de EO een nieuwe aflevering van de documentaireserie A History of Christianity, gepresenteerd door Diarmaid MacCullochs. Aflevering: God in reparatie (God in the dock)
MacCullochs' eigen levensverhaal maakt hem tot een symbool van een kenmerkende eigenschap van het westelijke christendom, scepticisme. In deze aflevering redelijk veel aandacht voor Spinoza - vanuit de Portugese Synagoge, die officieel geopend is in 1675; Spinoza is daar waarschijnlijk nooit in geweest - het was niet de synagoge van waaruit hij verbannen is. Jammer dat dit bezienswaardige programma werd ontsierd door een onbegrijpelijke blunder in de vertaling van de titel "Aflevering: God in reparatie (God in the dock)."
Dacht de vertaler echt dat "God in reparatie" nog iets betekende?
De correcte vertaling luidt: God in de beklaagdenbank.
To be in the dock = terechtstaan

Bedankt voor deze bijdrage, Bouwe Postmus. Het maakt de bedoeling duidelijker van de titel van het boek van de zeer religieuze C.S. Lewis, waarvan de titel van deze aflevering was afgeleid. Wikipedia:
"God in the Dock is a collection of essays and speeches from C. S. Lewis. Its title implies "God on Trial" and is based on an analogy made by Lewis suggesting that modern human beings, rather than seeing themselves as standing before God in judgment, prefer to place God on trial while acting as his judge."
